This year's charter event will take place Saturday, August 17 at 6:00 pm at the Washington Printmaker's Gallery in the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Downtown Silver Spring. The event will feature heavy hors d’oeuvres and an open bar selection of local beers and wines. Afterward, continue the celebration with us at some nearby bars in Silver Spring.

The DC Young Professionals Kiwanis club is seeking committed individuals who are interested in serving in active leadership roles with the organization's Board of Directors and committees in the 2013-14 year. By volunteering the DCYP's leadership team, you can help guide the club's operations and activities, build valuable leadership and professional skills, and help strengthen the club's impact in the DC community.
In order to serve on the board or committee leadership positions, individuals must be current DCYP members. Board elections will take place during the annual meeting on June 26. If you are interested in running for a board position or joining a committee, please contact Amanda at email@example.com.
Club Receives Website Award!
Our club website has been designated a 2013 Showcase Club Website! "On behalf of the entire club, I am honored to receive this award," said Amanda Guelzow, the club president. "We are proud to be one of Kiwanis' premier clubs for young professionals!"
Networking Reception Rescheduled for March 13
Due to the closing of the Federal Government and expected snow on March 6, the Young Professionals Networking Reception is rescheduled for Wednesday, March 13, 6:00-8:00 PM in the upstairs bar of Madhatter.
All DC-area young professionals are invited to join DCYP Kiwanis for a special evening of networking to meet other young professionals and learn about ways to become more involved with the community through DCYP. Travel Size Toiletries Needed for Homeless Care Packages!
The DC Young Professionals Kiwanis club is collecting travel size toiletries for the homeless. The items will be used for care packages that will be distributed to homeless individuals in DC during our Street Outreach project on February 12. Toiletries should be brought to the General Meeting on January 30, 7:00pm at the West End Library, where you can help assemble the care packages. Additional items will also be accepted at the DCYP Happy Hour at Elephant and Castle , February 6 at 6:00pm.
The following unopened, travel size items are requested.
DCYP Kiwanis to Serve at MLK National Day of Service Event on January 19
On Saturday, January 19, join DCYP Kiwanis for the “Project Inside/Outside” National Day of Service Event in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We will work alongside members of the Kiwanis family to revitalize and strengthen the Capitol Hill Montessori School at Logan and its surrounding neighborhood.
The project is designed to enhance and preserve the school “Inside,” and to serve the needs of the homeless through a blanket drive “Outside.” Volunteers may be painting, completing odd jobs, dusting, gardening, and other improvement projects at this innovative school.
200 Columbia Heights Children Enjoy Kiwanis Halloween Carnival
On November 2, nearly 200 children from the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, DC enjoyed a fun, family-friendly Halloween celebration at the Annual Kiwanis Halloween Carnival. Each fall, the DC Young Professionals (DCYP) and NW Washington Kiwanis Clubs partner to organize this event that includes a variety of Halloween-themed games and activities, arts and crafts, food, candy, and of course, costumes.
Despite being rescheduled due to Hurricane Sandy, the enthusiasm and excitement of the volunteers, the staff, and especially the students was contagious this year. The carnival, which draws students of all ages, takes place at the Rita Bright Family and Youth Center, part of the Latin...

DCYP Kiwanis Elects New Board!
The club membership of DCYP Kiwanis elected a new board of directors at its annual meeting on June 13, 2012. The following members will take office, effective October 1:

Kiwanis serves over 100 children in one night!
DCYP Kiwanis, in a partnership with the NW Kiwanis Club, served over 100 children at the Boys & Girls Club in DC's Ward 8, an underserved area. Over 30 volunteers donated their time and energy to put on the second annual Kiwanis Spring Carnival that allowed the kids to participate in age-appropriate activities, games, and crafts.
DCYP Kiwanis Celebrates 7 Years of Service!
Twenty four members and guests celebrated the seventh anniversary of the founding of DC Metro Young Professionals (DCYP) Kiwanis at MOCA DC, an art gallery in Georgetown. The event was an evening reception of socializing, hors d'oeuvres, and wine tasting. The club has performed approximately 3,500 hours of community service since its chartering in November 2005.
DCYP to Celebrate 7th Anniversary
It is hard to believe DCYP Kiwanis has been serving the DC community for 7 years! On April 28, 2012, we will hold a Wine Tasting Charter Event at MOCA DC, a Georgetown art gallery, to celebrate the club's achievements. DCYP Inducts 9 New Members!
At the March 28 General Meeting, we inducted and welcomed 9 new members into the club! We are so excited to have all of you as part of DCYP: Zaakirah, Katie, Tom, Laura, Maria, Amy, Hab, Dan, and Benita!
Taco Fiesta at The Children's Inn
Tacos were on the menu for dinner at The Children's Inn as 9 DCYP volunteers took over the kitchen to cook for the 65 children and parents. DCYP prepared 20 lbs of taco meat, 12 cans of black beans, 140 tacos, and over 200 cookies for the families staying at this "home away from home" on the campus of NIH. The children signed this lovely card to say thank you. DCYP had a great time cooking, serving, and meeting the families and looks forward to working with The Children's Inn again soon.
DCYP Helps Local Senior with Home Maintenance
As basic home maintenance and cleaning becomes a burden to elderly individuals in our community, volunteers like DCYP are able to step in and assist through a program called Age in Place. On Saturday January 28, 11 Kiwanians went to the home of a local elderly woman to clean and organize her home from top to bottom. She was so thrilled and grateful for this assistance. Through projects like this, Age in Place helps these individuals to be able to remain in their homes, living independently.

Raking Leaves for a Good Cause
DCYP joined CVN of Arlington County in the annual winter clean-up for Community Residences, an organization that maintains homes for persons with disabilities. It was a beautiful day to enjoy the Fall weather and give back by raking leaves!
Chris S. is Member of the Month!
Chris has been involved in DCYP for over a year and has enjoyed volunteering at many service projects, as well as participating the summer kickball team! He is from Chevy Chase, MD and went to Wesleyan University and Fordham law school. Chris works in the wild, sometimes crazy world of commercial litigation, at the law firm Kutak Rock LLP. For fun, he likes to go out and dance. He also wrote music in college.
Annual Kiwanis Halloween Carnival A Huge Success!
October 27, 2011 - DCYP Kiwanis hosted a Halloween carnival for over 125 children at the Loughran Recreation Center in NW Washington, DC. The kids dressed up in costumes and enjoyed playing Halloween themed games where they were able to collect tickets redeemable for prizes as well as candy! New additions to the carnival this year included the Moon Bounce and pumpkin decorating. Pizza, snacks, and drinks were served as well. Over 30 volunteers from the DCYP, NW Washington Kiwanis and other K-Family clubs attended the project. Each year, DCYP partners with the NW Washington Kiwanis club to organize the event with the goal of providing a safe and fun atmosphere for the children to celebrate Halloween....
Mikaela M. Honored as Member of the Month!
Mikaela M. is the DCYP Kiwanis Member of the Month! Mikaela is from Canton, Ohio and attended Ohio State University. She is a Cardiovascular Perfusionist at Georgetown University Hospital. She joined the transplant team at the age of 21, making her the youngest cardiovascular perfusionist to be certified in the District of Columbia. When she's not working, Mikaela enjoys baking, volunteering, working out, and embarking on new adventures.
DCYP Plays Kickball with the Boys & Girls Club
For the second summer in a row, members and friends of DCYP Kiwanis played kickball together on the National Mall each Wednesday as part of a local kickball league. As the season came to an end, we decided to host a finale kickball game at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington! Over 60 kids and volunteers played together in a fun game and celebrated afterward with a pizza party. Thank you to our sponsors, NAKID Social Sports, for providing the pizza and refreshments for the kids after the game!

Tara N. is the Member of the Month!
Originally from Florida, Tara received her bachelor's in Marketing and English from the University of Tampa. She then received her master's in Public Administration from American University. Tara is currently a program consultant at Leading Authorities. Tara loves Glee, plays a great game of kickball, and always brings a smile to every DCYP event. Congrats, Tara!

Dustin B. is Member of the Month!
Dustin is a senior store manager for the Boy Scouts of America. He is originally from Norton, MA. When he's not renovating his condo in Maryland, Dustin loves to be outside hiking and camping -- and even playing kickball for DCYP. Dustin always brings a positive attitude and smile to every club event. Congratulations, Dustin!
Ajay J. is the Member of the Month!
Ajay received his bachelor’s in Political Science from the University of Michigan and is currently a Membership Services Associate at the American Wind Energy Association. He is a loyal Michigan football fan and loves to cook and play tennis. Ajay is really fun and always brings a smile to every DCYP event.

Member of the Month: Ashley M.
Ashley received her bachelor’s in Business Administration from the University of Georgia and is currently a manager at the American Society of Travel Agents. She loves everything Disney and her newly adopted cat, Willie. Ashley is really fun, an awesome kickball player, and always brings a smile to every DCYP event. Congrats on being Member of the Month, Ashley!
New Member of the Month: Stephanie M.
Stephanie received her undergrad from Rowan University and her master’s from Webster University. After growing up in Saudi Arabia, she moved to New Jersey for high school. Meanwhile, she also traveled frequently to visit family in beautiful Aruba – where her uncle is a member of the local Kiwanis club! She loves to travel there and actually just returned from a trip there. Stephanie is really fun and always brings a smile to every DCYP event. We are very honored to announce Stephanie as our Member of the Month.
Kris I. is the Member of the Month!
Kristin – or better known as Kris – has taken a very active role in the club! Kris got her undergrad in international studies and French from Allegheny College and now spends her days working on the Hill for the House of Representatives. She loves to travel, especially after studying abroad in France, and has an obsession with Chicago sports. Kris is always a smiling face at club events and we’re glad to have her!
Jackie I. Honored as Member of the Month
Jackie I. was honored as member of the month this past month. A recent graduate of George Washington University and past Circle K member, Jackie has taken a very active role in the club. Jackie got her undergrad in economics and now works for the Federal Reserve Board. When she’s not studying and shopping, she is busy attending a DCYP event! Jackie makes a fine addition to the club and we’re glad to have her!

In an article entitled "Service clubs update to woo young members", USA Today writer Haya El Nasser writes that many service clubs around the country are retooling to focus on the next generation. Our club is highlighted as a civic organization that focuses on empowering younger people to help the community and make friends on a schedule that is flexible.
